Tomorrow on Parliament Hill from 11am: Commemoration of the illegal invocation of Emergency Act, and other major (legal and political) related developments. Update on FPPledge initiative
Freedom Convoy representatives speak to the media in Ottawa – February 16, 2024 (CPAC VIDEO). Canadian Democratic Defence Association proposes new political initiative – February 16, 2024
If you are in Ottawa tomorrow, consider checking the Parliament Hill starting from 11 am for the Commemoration of 2022 Freedom Convoy in Ottawa - the largest peaceful protest in the Canadian capital in the Canadian History, and the illegal invokement of Emergency Act that led to a rather brutal end of it.
This is how this event is presented by people Freedom Convoy reps:
Freedom Convoy representatives speak to the media in Ottawa – February 16, 2024
Freedom Convoy representatives Derek Noonan and Chris Dacey hold a news conference on Parliament Hill to comment on the recent Federal Court ruling on the government’s invocation of the Emergencies Act, and to discuss the future of their movement. On January 23, the Federal Court ruled that the federal government’s decision to invoke the Act in early 2022 to clear convoy protesters was unreasonable and led to an infringement of Charter rights. The group and its supporters are expected to congregate on Parliament Hill this weekend, marking two years since the first protests in 2022.

The CDDA hopes to run independent candidates at all levels of government to address what it says is a lack of accountability, leadership and representation in Canada

If you have not joined Foundational Principles Pledge - Canada Initiative (www.fpledge.ca) yet , please consider doing it. - This is how you will be able to help to bring more transparency and accountability for the actions of all Elected Representatives in all regions and levels of governance in Canada.
People who sign the pledge will be provided with tools for monitoring and reporting the performance of their elected representatives - in the area of their residence.
Note that the www.fpledge.ca portal has substantially evolved and has now also the SCORECARD page that links to the interactive Rights and Freedoms Index App that tracks the positions of all Canadian politicians with respect to the fundamental rights and freedoms of all Canadians. At the moment, the App shows the data for the BC MLA only (as they are expecting elections there soon), with other provinces and levels of the government to be added later. Check it out - really neat !
The text of the FP pledge is provided below - one for People and one for Politicians. To me, these seem to be the most natural and most powerful ways to help us all to build the country we want to live in. You can do your part too!
The image below (from www.fpledge.ca) describes well the present level of Canadian’s involvement in the Canadian democracy. The FPPLedge initiative will allow to change that.
Other related developments - Legal
A historical legal action against several senior Canadian officials and Canadian Banks has been launched the The Accountability Project (https://tapcan.org/) in relationship to the damages caused by the illegal invocation of the Emergency Act.
Vincent Gircys, Eddie Cornell, and 18 other plaintiffs have launched legal action against Justin Trudeau, Chrystia Freeland, David Lametti, Dominic Leblanc, Bill Blair, Marco Mendicino, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, cabinet ministers, banks and credit unions and more than 28 others.
The statement reads:
The conduct of the Defendants toward each and every Plaintiff in these circumstances included several torts, breaches of fundamental rights and freedoms, and wanton disregard for the wellbeing of the individual Plaintiffs. The conduct was unlawful, reprehensible, was politically motivated and charged which included large-scale attempts to intimidate, denigrate, and otherwise disparage and discourage the Plaintiffs.
The Plaintiffs were unlawfully targeted unconstitutionally and had their Charter rights violated without due process or procedure and suffered harm as a result. This is an exceptional case wherein the conduct of the Defendants, any or all of them, was malicious, high-handed, and reprehensible misconduct that offends the Court’s sense of decency and a substantial punitive damages award is warranted in these circumstances to dissuade such future conduct.

The main organizers of the Freedom Convoy have also launched a $2 million lawsuit against the federal government on the two-year anniversary of the Emergencies Act being invoked, claiming that Ottawa violated their Charter rights when invoking the act to end the peaceful protest.
Tamara Lich stated:
“Our goal was, has always been, and will continue to be, holding our federal government agencies and our institutions accountable for breaching the Charter Rights & Freedoms of Canadian Citizens… We will continue our quest for justice and accountability and will exhaust every tool available in order to ensure such violations never occur against the Canadian people again.” - More

Elsewhere, a number of Small Claim Civil Actions have also been filed by people who suffered or were injured because of the the Emergency Act. I personally met one person, a peaceful protester, whose wrist was broken by the police on 17th February. I hope he filed the Action too…

Finally, another major legal development has just finished in Coutts, in a small town on the border of Alberta, where four protesters were hold in prison for two years on (still unproved) charges to commit murder. As you can watch from the emotional video below, these charges are directly related to the Emergency Act and everything else posted above.
